ancient library
Classical knowledge vault
An ancient library is a collection of texts—typically scrolls, tablets, or codices—housed in a building or complex in the classical world.
The Library of Alexandria remains the most famous example, though ancient libraries existed throughout Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome.
The phrase evokes vast repositories of knowledge, often lost to fire or conquest: Scholars can only speculate about what treasures the ancient library contained.
