air raid drill
Bombing response rehearsal
An air raid drill is a practice exercise preparing people to respond to aerial attack—taking shelter, following evacuation routes, or assuming protective positions.
Common during World War II and the Cold War, when nuclear attack seemed plausible: We crouched under our desks during the air raid drill.
Now largely historical, though similar drills persist for other emergencies.
