absolute majority

Over half wins

An absolute majority is more than half of all possible votes—not just half of those cast, but half of total eligible voters or members.

A candidate who wins 60% of votes cast may still lack an absolute majority if turnout was low.

The term distinguishes from a simple majority or plurality: The amendment requires an absolute majority to pass.
