Judges disagree, barely
A split decision is a verdict reached when judges or officials disagree, with the outcome determined by majority vote rather than unanimity.
The term comes from boxing, where judges score a fight independently: He won by split decision, two judges to one.
It extends to any contested ruling or choice where opinion divides: The committee reached a split decision on the proposal.
