aardwolves
Striped African insectivores
Aardwolves is the plural of aardwolf, a small nocturnal mammal native to eastern and southern Africa.
Despite its name and hyena-like appearance, the aardwolf feeds almost exclusively on termites rather than carrion.
The name comes from Afrikaans for "earth wolf," reflecting its burrowing habits.
