United States Coast Guard
Coastal defense service
The United States Coast Guard is the maritime security and rescue service of the United States, responsible for enforcing laws at sea, conducting search and rescue operations, maintaining navigational aids, and protecting coastlines.
Unlike other U.S. military branches, it operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime and can transfer to the Navy during wartime: The Coast Guard rescued twelve sailors from the sinking vessel.
