Soviet Navy
Moscow's maritime force
The Soviet Navy was the naval warfare branch of the Soviet Union's armed forces from 1918 to 1991.
Under Admiral Sergei Gorshkov's leadership, it grew from a coastal defense force into a blue-water fleet rivaling American naval power during the Cold War.
The term now refers historically to that era's fleet and doctrine: Soviet Navy submarines patrolled the Atlantic throughout the 1980s.
