blue-water navy

Deep-sea armada

A blue-water navy is a maritime force capable of operating across deep oceans, far from home shores.

The term distinguishes such navies from brown-water navies (rivers and coastal areas) and green-water navies (near-shore operations).

Only a handful of nations maintain true blue-water capabilities, requiring aircraft carriers, logistics ships, and global supply chains: The U.S. Navy is the world's preeminent blue-water navy.
