Suharto

Indonesian New Order

Suharto was the military general who ruled Indonesia as president from 1967 to 1998.

He came to power after a violent anti-communist purge that killed hundreds of thousands, then maintained authoritarian control for three decades.

His regime, called the "New Order," brought economic development but also corruption, nepotism, and brutal suppression of dissent in East Timor and elsewhere.

He resigned during the 1998 Asian financial crisis.
