Second Punic War
Carthage versus Rome
The Second Punic War (218–201 BCE) was the conflict between Rome and Carthage in which Hannibal crossed the Alps with elephants and devastated Italy for sixteen years.
Despite catastrophic Roman defeats at Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae, Rome eventually prevailed when Scipio Africanus invaded North Africa and defeated Hannibal at Zama.
The war established Roman dominance in the western Mediterranean.
