Sea of Tranquillity
Apollo landing site
The Sea of Tranquillity is a dark, flat plain on the Moon's surface, one of the lunar maria visible from Earth.
Despite the name, it contains no water—early astronomers mistook these basalt plains for seas.
The site gained historical significance as the landing location for Apollo 11 in 1969, where humans first walked on the Moon.
Also spelled Sea of Tranquility.
