Roman consul
Republic's chief executive
A Roman consul was one of two chief magistrates elected annually to lead the Roman Republic, holding supreme military and civil authority.
The office represented the highest elected position in Rome, with each consul able to veto the other.
After the Republic fell, the title became largely ceremonial under the emperors.
Caesar served as consul before becoming dictator.
