Rockefeller family
American industrial dynasty
The Rockefeller family is an American dynasty whose wealth originated with John D.
Rockefeller's Standard Oil monopoly in the late 19th century.
The name became synonymous with extreme wealth and, later, philanthropy—the family founded institutions including Rockefeller University, the University of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art.
He married into the Rockefeller family.
To call someone a Rockefeller suggests vast inherited wealth: I can't afford that—I'm no Rockefeller.
