charitable trust

Benevolent legal entity

A charitable trust is a legal arrangement in which assets are held and managed for the benefit of a charitable purpose rather than specific individuals.

The trust must serve purposes the law recognizes as charitable—education, relief of poverty, advancement of religion, or other community benefit.

Unlike private trusts, charitable trusts can exist indefinitely and receive favorable tax treatment: They established a charitable trust to fund scholarships for first-generation college students.
