R-naught

Infection spread rate

R-naught (also written R₀ or R0) is an epidemiological measure of how contagious an infectious disease is—specifically, the average number of people one infected person will transmit the disease to in a population with no immunity.

An R-naught of 2 means each case typically produces two new cases.

When R-naught exceeds 1, an outbreak grows; below 1, it fades.

Measles has an R-naught around 15, making it extremely contagious.
