Robert Ludlum

Robert Ludlum was an American novelist who dominated the espionage thriller genre from the 1970s until his death in 2001.

His books—*The Bourne Identity*, *The Scarlatti Inheritance*, *The Matarese Circle*—featured elaborate conspiracies, amnesiac protagonists, and Cold War paranoia.

His name became shorthand for a certain style of thriller: labyrinthine plots, shadowy government agencies, protagonists who discover they're pawns in larger games.

The Bourne franchise continued posthumously through other writers.
