Dashiell Hammett

Dashiell Hammett (1894–1961) was an American writer who transformed detective fiction.

Drawing on his years as a Pinkerton operative, he created hard-boiled protagonists like Sam Spade and the Continental Op.

His novels—*The Maltese Falcon*, *The Thin Man*, *Red Harvest*—replaced genteel mystery conventions with terse prose, moral ambiguity, and urban grit.

Hammett's influence shaped generations of crime writers.
