Otaku

Japanese fandom devotee

Otaku is Japanese slang for someone obsessively devoted to a hobby, especially anime, manga, or video games.

In Japan, the term can be mildly derogatory, suggesting social awkwardness or unhealthy fixation.

In Western usage, anime and manga fans have largely reclaimed it as a neutral or proud self-identifier: I've been an otaku since middle school.
