Orphic hymns
Mystic Greek prayers
Orphic hymns are ancient Greek religious poems addressed to various gods and divine forces, associated with the mystical tradition of Orphism.
The surviving collection of 87 hymns, likely composed in the 2nd or 3rd century CE, invokes deities through epithets and requests their favor.
They were probably used in ritual contexts with incense offerings: The Orphic hymn to Dionysus calls him "many-named" and "loud-roaring." The tradition claims descent from the mythical poet Orpheus.
