Okie

1930s farm refugee

Okie is informal for a person from Oklahoma.

The term gained prominence during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, when impoverished farmers fled Oklahoma for California, where Okie became a slur suggesting poor, uneducated migrants.

Today most Oklahomans use it neutrally or with pride: I'm an Okie born and raised.
