Okies
Depression-era farm refugees
Okies refers to migrants from Oklahoma, especially those who fled the Dust Bowl during the 1930s seeking work in California.
The term carried strong class prejudice—Californians used it disparagingly for any poor migrant from the Southern Plains, regardless of actual origin: The Okies came west in rattletrap trucks loaded with everything they owned.
John Steinbeck's *The Grapes of Wrath* immortalized their experience.
The stigma has faded, and some Oklahomans now use the term with pride.
