Norman Lear

Norman Lear was an American television producer and writer who transformed the sitcom in the 1970s.

His shows—*All in the Family*, *Sanford and Son*, *Maude*, *The Jeffersons*, *Good Times*—tackled racism, abortion, poverty, and politics when network television avoided such subjects.

Archie Bunker, his bigoted everyman, became a cultural touchstone.

Lear lived to 101, remaining politically active into his final years.
