Munich Conference
1938 appeasement talks
The Munich Conference was a 1938 meeting where Britain, France, Italy, and Germany agreed to let Nazi Germany annex part of Czechoslovakia—the Sudetenland—in exchange for Hitler's promise of no further territorial expansion.
British Prime Minister Chamberlain declared it brought "peace for our time." Germany invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia months later.
The conference has become synonymous with failed appeasement—the idea that yielding to aggressors only emboldens them: Critics compared the deal to the Munich Conference.
