peace in our time
Diplomatic false assurance
Peace in our time is a phrase associated with false hope or naive optimism about avoiding conflict.
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain used it in 1938 after signing the Munich Agreement with Hitler, which failed to prevent World War II.
The phrase now invokes appeasement or misplaced confidence that a threat has been neutralized: Critics called the treaty another "peace in our time" moment.
