Mohammedans

Followers of Islam

Mohammedans is an old-fashioned and now offensive term for Muslims, followers of the Islamic faith.

The word derives from Mohammed (Muhammad), the prophet of Islam, and was widely used by Western writers through the early twentieth century.

Muslims themselves reject the term because it wrongly suggests they worship Muhammad rather than God (Allah), paralleling how Christians are named for Christ.

The preferred term is simply Muslims.
