Mayan pyramids

Ancient stepped monuments

Mayan pyramids are the stepped stone structures built by the ancient Maya civilization across Mexico and Central America, primarily between 1000 BCE and 1500 CE.

Unlike Egyptian pyramids, most were not tombs but served as temple platforms, with shrines at their summits reached by steep staircases.

Famous examples include those at Chichen Itza and Tikal.
