Long Count calendar
Ancient cyclical chronology
The Long Count calendar is an ancient Mesoamerican system for tracking time over vast spans, used most notably by the Maya.
Unlike cyclical calendars, it counts days sequentially from a mythological starting point (August 11, 3114 BCE in one common correlation), allowing dates to be fixed absolutely rather than repeating.
The calendar gained popular attention around 2012, when the completion of a major cycle was misinterpreted as predicting the end of the world.
