Mandarin language

China's official speech

Mandarin is the most widely spoken form of Chinese, the official language of China and Taiwan, and one of four official languages of Singapore.

It serves as the standard spoken form—called Putonghua in China, Guoyu in Taiwan—based largely on the Beijing dialect.

Mandarin is tonal, with four main tones that distinguish meaning.

The term also covers a group of related dialects spoken across northern and southwestern China.
