A majordomo is the head servant of a large household, responsible for managing staff and overseeing domestic affairs.
The term extends to anyone who runs things behind the scenes for a powerful person—a chief steward, executive assistant, or right-hand man: His majordomo handled all the scheduling and correspondence.
The word carries a slightly old-fashioned or formal air.
