Land of Israel
Holy territory, anciently
The Land of Israel is the biblical territory promised by God to the Jewish people, roughly corresponding to ancient Canaan.
The term carries deep religious and nationalist significance, used by Jews to describe their ancestral homeland.
In modern discourse, it often appears in Zionist contexts to assert Jewish historical claims to the region: The settlers believed they were returning to the Land of Israel.
The Hebrew equivalent is Eretz Yisrael.
