Thermidorian Reaction

Post-terror French moderation

The Thermidorian Reaction was the overthrow of Robespierre and the end of the Reign of Terror in revolutionary France, occurring in July 1794 (the month of Thermidor in the revolutionary calendar).

The term now describes any political shift where revolutionaries turn against radical leadership, pulling back toward moderation: The party's recent moves suggest a Thermidorian reaction against its progressive wing.
