Iranian hostage crisis

Tehran captive ordeal

The Iranian hostage crisis was a diplomatic standoff from 1979 to 1981 in which Iranian revolutionaries held 52 American diplomats and citizens captive at the U.S. embassy in Tehran for 444 days.

The crisis followed the Iranian Revolution and America's sheltering of the deposed Shah.

It dominated Jimmy Carter's presidency and ended minutes after Ronald Reagan's inauguration: The Iranian hostage crisis defined the final year of Carter's term.
