IMAX camera
Massive format shooter
An IMAX camera is a specialized motion picture camera designed to shoot on 70mm film with frames significantly larger than standard formats, producing images of exceptional resolution and clarity for projection on massive IMAX screens.
The cameras are bulky, heavy, and notoriously loud, which has historically limited their use to documentaries and special sequences rather than full narrative films.
Digital IMAX cameras now exist, though purists distinguish them from the original film format.
Directors like Christopher Nolan have championed shooting action sequences—and occasionally entire films—with IMAX cameras: The Dark Knight's bank heist was shot in IMAX.
