Hypnos

Greek drowsiness personified

Hypnos is the Greek god of sleep, twin brother of Thanatos (death) and father of Morpheus (dreams).

The name survives in English through derivatives: hypnosis, hypnotic, hypnotize.

In literary contexts, Hypnos personifies sleep itself: Hypnos claimed her before she reached the bed. (Lowercase hypnos is rare but may appear as a poetic synonym for sleep.)
