road hypnosis
Driving without awareness
Road hypnosis is a trance-like state that can occur during long, monotonous drives, where the driver operates the vehicle competently but has no conscious memory of doing so.
Also called highway hypnosis or white line fever.
The phenomenon results from the repetitive visual stimulation of endless pavement and lane markers: I snapped out of road hypnosis and realized I'd driven fifty miles without any memory of it.
