Hugo Chavez
Hugo Chávez was the president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013.
A former military officer who led a failed coup in 1992, he later won election and remade Venezuela's government along socialist lines, using oil wealth to fund social programs while concentrating power and suppressing opposition.
His confrontational anti-American rhetoric and alliance with Cuba made him a polarizing figure internationally—hero to the Latin American left, authoritarian to critics.
