House of Savoy
Piedmont's ruling family
The House of Savoy was a European royal dynasty that ruled territories in the Alps from the 11th century, later becoming kings of Sardinia and ultimately of unified Italy from 1861 to 1946.
The family's domain expanded from its base in Savoy (now part of France) to encompass Piedmont and eventually the Italian peninsula.
The House of Savoy produced Italy's last king before the republic.
