Blacksburg team name
Hokies refers to the athletic teams and students of Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University).
The term comes from a nonsense word in an 1896 school spirit chant.
A Hokie is a Virginia Tech student, alumnus, or fan: The Hokies play in the ACC.
The school mascot is a turkey called the HokieBird.
