Grapevine

Grapevines are woody, climbing plants of the genus Vitis, cultivated for their fruit, grapes, which are used fresh, dried, or fermented into wine.

Their tendrils, modified stems, coil around supports to anchor the plant.

Grapevines are pruned to control growth and maximize fruit yield, with techniques like spur pruning or cane pruning.

The species Vitis vinifera dominates wine production globally, but North American species like Vitis labrusca are used for juice and jelly.

Grapevines are susceptible to pests like phylloxera, which devastated European vineyards in the 19th century.

The vineyard uses cane pruning to shape its grapevines for optimal sunlight exposure.
