Firewall
Network protection product
A firewall is a barrier designed to prevent the spread of fire, particularly the panel between a vehicle's engine compartment and passenger cabin.
In computing, where the term is far more common, a firewall is software or hardware that monitors network traffic and blocks unauthorized access while permitting legitimate communication.
The company's firewall prevented employees from accessing social media.
The figurative sense extends to any protective barrier: She maintained a strict firewall between her work and personal life.
