Easter Island heads

Polynesian carved colossi

Easter Island heads are the massive stone statues, properly called moai, that stand on Easter Island in the Pacific.

The iconic figures feature elongated faces with prominent noses and brows, carved by the Rapa Nui people centuries ago.

Though called heads, most are actually full torsos partially buried over time.

The phrase sometimes describes someone with an inscrutable or stone-faced expression: He sat there like an Easter Island head, completely unreadable.
