Dog Star
Canis Major's beacon
Dog Star is Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, located in the constellation Canis Major (the Greater Dog).
The ancient Romans believed its rising with the sun caused the oppressive heat of late summer—hence dog days.
The name comes from its position in the celestial dog that follows the hunter Orion across the sky.
