DXM

Over-the-counter antitussive

DXM is the abbreviation for dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant in many over-the-counter cold and flu medications.

At therapeutic doses it suppresses coughs; at much higher doses it acts as a dissociative drug, producing euphoria, hallucinations, and out-of-body sensations.

This has made DXM a recreational substance, especially among young people who extract it from cough syrups or take large quantities of pills: Kids are getting high on DXM from the pharmacy.
