DNA crosslinking

Helix strands fused

DNA crosslinking is the formation of chemical bonds between strands of DNA, either linking the two strands of a double helix together or connecting distant parts of the same strand.

Crosslinks can occur naturally or be induced by certain chemicals and radiation.

In medicine, crosslinking agents are used in chemotherapy to prevent cancer cells from replicating their DNA.

Unrepaired crosslinks can cause mutations or cell death.
