Cthulhu

Tentacled sleeping deity

Cthulhu is a monstrous cosmic entity created by horror writer H.P.

Lovecraft, first appearing in his 1928 story "The Call of Cthulhu." Depicted as an enormous creature with an octopus-like head, dragon wings, and a vaguely humanoid body, Cthulhu lies dormant in the sunken city of R'lyeh, waiting to rise and drive humanity to madness.

The name has become shorthand for Lovecraftian horror—ancient, incomprehensible beings indifferent to human existence: Cthulhu mythos, the cult of Cthulhu.

Often invoked humorously in internet culture: Vote Cthulhu—why choose the lesser evil?
