Chads are the small pieces of paper or cardboard punched out when making holes—in paper tape, punch cards, or ballots.
A single piece is a chad.
The word gained notoriety during the 2000 U.S. presidential election, when Florida's outcome hinged on whether ballot chads were fully detached, hanging, dimpled, or pregnant.
The recount workers examined each chad under magnification.
