Banda Islands
Indonesian spice islands
The Banda Islands are a small volcanic archipelago in eastern Indonesia, historically the world's only source of nutmeg and mace.
This spice monopoly made them the focus of intense colonial competition between the Dutch and English in the 17th century: The Dutch massacred the Bandanese to secure control of the nutmeg trade.
