Allahu akbar
Arabic devotional phrase
Allahu akbar is an Arabic phrase meaning "God is greatest," used by Muslims in prayer, as an expression of faith, and in moments of joy, distress, or wonder.
It functions somewhat like "praise God" or "hallelujah" in English.
The phrase has become associated in Western media with terrorism due to its use by attackers, but for the world's Muslims it remains an ordinary part of daily religious practice: The call to prayer begins with Allahu akbar.
