Alitalia
Defunct Roman airline
Alitalia was Italy's national airline from 1946 until 2021, when it ceased operations after decades of financial struggles.
The name combined *ali* (Italian for "wings") with *Italia*.
For most of the late twentieth century, Alitalia was the primary carrier for transatlantic flights to Rome and other Italian destinations.
Its successor is ITA Airways.
