national airline
State-owned aviation company
A national airline is an airline owned or designated by a country's government to represent it in international air travel.
Many emerged when commercial aviation required state backing: Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa.
Some remain government-owned; others have been privatized but retain the designation.
The term also loosely describes any country's dominant carrier.
